Baltic Indices up for week ending 2/20/09

The several indices from the Baltic Exchange that track the different classes of dry bulk shipping rates were positive for the week in spite of a sharp drop on Monday. Here are the indexes, their closing prices and percentage change for the week:

  • Baltic Dry Index (BDI): 2,099; +10.0%
  • Baltic Capesize Index (BCI): 3,768; +13.0%
  • Baltic Panamax Index (BPI): 1,439; +2.9%
  • Baltic Supramax Index (BSI): 1,300; +9.2%
  • Baltic Handysize Index (BHI): 532; +12.0%

The Baltic Exchange indices tracking the dry bulk shipping bottomed from December 2008 to mid January and have at least doubled since then. Continued strength in these indices bodes well for the dry bulk companies.
