The Shipping Stocks I watch

As part of starting this blog I have identified 42 shipping stocks that trade in the U.S. and which I will be attempting to keep and eye on. Besides looking at the stocks as a group I have subdivided this bunch into some different segments. Some of the segments will have overlapping companies. Here are the different sub-categories and how many stocks are in each:

  • Tanker Stocks: 18
  • Dry Bulk Carrier Stocks: 11
  • Container and mixed fleet: 8
  • Other shipping stocks (not in the 3 above): 3
  • Shipping companies currently paying dividends: 28
  • Shipping companies that have suspended dividends: 7

I think the last two categories will be of special interest, because many investors are first attracted to shipping companies for the yields. As time goes on and I generate more information on this site, the categories will allow you to find recent or older information on these sub-categories.

Right now I am tracking the 42 stocks with Google Finance Portfolios. I set up the portfolios to calculate returns from the first day of 2009. Dividends earned are included in the returns of the dividend paying category, the others just track share prices. Over the next couple of weeks I will list the stocks in each category. Stay tuned.

    Tim,

Thanks for all your great work! Could you provide a link to the Google portfolio or at least present a list of the various shipping stocks?
