I find Ultrapetrol to be an interesting company due to the unique location of the majority of its businesses. The company runs barges up and down the Parana and Paraguay Rivers hauling supplies into and grains out of the interior of South America. Another business line is offshore supply, primarily off Brazil. And finally the company runs a fleet of about 10 ocean going OBO and product tanker ships. They recently discontinued a passenger ship line of business.
ULTR reported nice growth of revenues and profits for their continuing lines of business for 2008. Unfortunately, the company is so small and obscure I doubt whether anyone will notice even if they continue to grow their profits. ULTR could be appealing to the very patient, small cap value investor who can wait for the market to someday in the distant future to put a normal valuation on this company.
